Digital construction workers are needed to help build a virtual version of Burnie.

Burnie City Council has released a three-dimension map of the city for the popular online building game Minecraft.

The map contains roads and key structures, however, local Minecraft players are needed to detail buildings, decorate the landscape and bring the city to life.

Burnie teenager Mitchell Young has been playing Minecraft for years and said the project would help "bring the community together" during "this unprecedented time" of COVID-19.

"Everyone is working together, trying to build the city," the 13-year-old said.

"My first impressions were, 'Let's get to work.'"

Mitchell has already built his home and is currently working on re-creating the Metro Cinema.

"I'm keen to try and build Woolworths next," he said.

"Everyone is welcome to come and join, build the city and help us out."

The Burnie Minecraft project, Burnie Miners, contains two different playing worlds connected by a "portal".

The "creative world" provides players with unlimited building blocks to create Burnie, while the "survival world" offers opportunities to gather resources, fight monsters and build creative structures.

Burnie mayor Steve Kons said he was "keen to log on and have a go".

"I do like building things," he said.

The Burnie Miners will be coordinated through a youth-focused digital meeting ground launched on chat service Discord last month: NWTassie.com.

But the project is open to participants of all ages who register and non-gamers can view the development of the city online.

Prizes and events will be offered to help encourage the development of the city.

The Burnie map was developed for Minecraft by using mapping applications such as ELVIS, LIST and OpenStreetMaps data by 'Geoboxers', world leaders in real-world mapping on Minecraft.

Burnie Miners caters for both version of Minecraft: the Java Edition, used for those who play on computers; and the Minecraft Bedrock version, for those playing on phones, tablets or Xbox.
