Heavy vehicle workshops on EP

Free workshops are being held across the Eyre Peninsula next month to help explain heavy vehicle roadworthiness, road safety and compliance and maintenance responsibilities.

Grain Producers SA and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator are delivering the 'Roadworthy Heavy Vehicles Made Easy' campaign, after the Department for Planning, Transport and Infrastructure announced the scheme due to coroner recommendations following a series of fatal crashes.

The scheme's stage one phase was introduced in January 2017 requiring heavy vehicles three years or older to be inspected when changing ownership.

The second stage will likely require vehicles heavier than 4.5 tonnes to be inspected every two years once they reach four years from the manufacture date, and then once a year when they are 10 years old.

GPSA regional field officer Shane Gale said workshops are aimed at members of the Primary Producers SA commodity groups who own and operate their own heavy vehicles.

"GPSA is seeking involvement from primary producers across the full range of commodities in the state," he said.

"We encourage GPSA and PPSA commodity members to take advantage of the free training and support on offer, which will help them to better understand their responsibilities under heavy vehicle law and implement measures to reduce risk to their business."

Workshop participants will also be given the opportunity to take part in an inspection, receiving handy tips before their own inspections start.

Mr Gale said it was about producers protecting themselves, their business, their workers, and other road users.

"Producers need to be prepared for any changes to ensure it doesn't impact their bottom line," he said.
