Eyre Highway has been reopened at the SA/WA border.

The road had been closed for more than a week due to the catastrophic fire conditions and damage to the road surface in Western Australia, leaving traffic stopped at the border with South Australia and motorists stranded.

It was hoped the highway could be reopened on Thursday, but due to the Balladonia fire breaking containment lines on Wednesday that did not occur.

SA Police are advising motorists that the highway will be very busy over the next few days while the backlog of traffic clears, and people may wish to delay travelling to the area if possible, while services along the highway will need time to restock.

Police said they would be paying attention to traffic along the highway and urge drivers to resist the temptation to 'try to make up for lost time'.
