The Cowell and Kimba communities have responded strongly to a call to donate to bushfire affected communities in the eastern states of Australia.

Several hundred homes have been destroyed in the past month as bushfires continue to burn across the states of New South Wales and Queensland.

Last week, a team of local volunteers and Cowell Lions Club members spent three days packaging up donations from the community into boxes to send to communities struck by the bushfires.

A total of 150 donation boxes were packed up and sent to the mid north last Friday, where they will be sent east along with donations from communities who were affected by the Pinery bushfire in 2015.

Local businesses across Cowell set up drop off points, with the Kimba District Council also receiving donations.

Kirralee Beinke said many of the boxes were set up for families and were large assortments of personal care items and children's entertainment such as books and stationery.

"We had a whole array of everything and anything," she said.

"We were able to make those (family) boxes into quite big ones."

She said since putting the call out for donations, there had been a "phenomenal response" from both the Cowell and Kimba communities.

"It's just so great to see the community rally behind Australians in need," she said.

She said the aim of the donations was to give families and individuals going through a difficult time the positive experience of receiving a personalised gift from across the country.

"It's just all about making them feel nice," she said.

Mrs Beinke thanked everyone who had donated items for the project and the businesses that had assisted by setting up deposit locations.

"It was really well received," she said.
