The Cleve Area School has named its top entrepreneurial team to head to Sydney this month for the National Brilliant Business Kids Festival.
Year 8 students Georgia Macgowan and Jorja Newlyn will represent South Australia after winning the Agrifutures 2019 Brilliant Business Kids Pitch.
Competing against the Cleve Area School year 8 and 9 classes, the students pitched 'The Handy Trough' - a puck-sized, solar-powered water trough sensor which will check both water levels and quality and communicate updates to a farmer's phone.
The students tallied up the amount of hours some local farmers were spending checking water troughs on remote properties and identified a problem causing financial losses through lost stock and poor sheep conditions.
'The Handy Trough' was voted the top pitch out of more than 25 student concepts by a panel of judges working in the local agriculture industry.
The exercise is part of the school's participation in the Agrifutures program, a course aiming to develop entrepreneurial learning skills in Year 8 and 9 students at seven selected schools across the country.
Georgia Macgowan and Jorja Newlyn are spending the rest of the month improving their pitch before they present it at the University of Sydney Business School on November 29 to a panel of celebrity industry judges.
Cleve Area School Agrifutures coordinator Seonie Robst said the school was seeking sponsors from the community to get the students to the event.
"It's been a long journey and a lot of research and refinement for the girls to get to this point - they've worked hard and had to beat out some tough competition - but now we need help to get them all the way to Sydney," she said.
"All up, we need to send five people to Sydney, with accommodation for two nights, including parents and a teacher - and that's why we're seeking support from the wider agricultural community to support this team."
