Local councils are concerned the proposed three-year ban on snapper fishing will affect the viability of their local communities.
State opposition spokesperson for planning and local government Tony Piccolo heard from the councils at an Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association meeting in Ceduna last Friday.
He said the short consultation period had not been enough for them to express their concerns and opposition to the ban was "palpable".
"The message I heard was that these communities want the state government to engage in genuine consultation to avoid decisions which could have devastating consequences for their industries and their people."
Mayors at the EPLGA meeting passed a motion calling on the government to suspend the proposed ban until a rigorous scientific study had been completed.
