As the silo art at Cowell progresses, the identity of the local legend looking across the Cowell Oval has been revealed.

Lionel Deer has been well known in the community for a long time as an artist, a farmer, an accomplished footballer and a community man.

However it was his affinity for camels that has made him the subject of artist Austin 'Nitsua' Moncrieff's silo mural.

Mr Deer reared camels for many years to muster sheep, and their regular appearances in the town's Christmas pageant is something many locals remember fondly.

As soon as the face of the camel was posted to social media before Mr Deer's face had been painted, many long-time locals immediately guessed who the silhouette of a man would eventually become.

Visitors to the Cowell Oval can now see a clear image of the artwork, with both the face of Mr Deer and his camel Diamantina complete.

The final touches are expected to be completed in the next week.
