Guests of the Cowell RSL filled the Institute for a three course meal in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the group's first meeting.
The RSL still has the minutes of the first meeting of the then-named Returned Army, Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League on May 20 1919, where an eight person committee was formed.
Local veterans, service families, community members and representatives from neighbouring sub-branches attended the celebrations.
Among the guests were South Australian Governor Hieu Van Le and former state RSL President Jock Statton.
The Governor addressed the dinner and spoke about his "deep personal gratitude" for Australian war veterans, as well as the important role country sub branches play in assisting returned soldiers and commemorating the service of members of the community.
Cowell RSL President Rob McFarlane reminisced on his experience being welcomed into the RSL after returning from Vietnam, and thanked community groups including the Cowell Football and Netball Clubs and the Cowell Area School for their involvement in centenary celebrations.
