Last Saturday was the Cleve Golf Club men's first qualifying round for their club championships.
It was great to catch up with sponsor of the day Gary Crettenden from Cleve Auto after the round.
The weather was perfect with light breeze and clear skies but the course remains terribly dry after the record dry spell that we are promised may break this week.
The new artificial grass tee blocks are a pleasure to use and were part of drought assistance grants to our area this year.
Subs this year have been reduced to $100 in an effort to attract more members so come out and have a go.
We had a good field of 19 players last week and was good to see some new faces even though on old shoulders in Mark Ward and Peter Keam who we have not seen for a while.
Showing some early good form were Trent Rodda (acting captain) and runner up Scott Elleway in division one and Peter (Turtle) Crosby and runner up Tom Gillings in division two.
Novelties went to the accurate ones, with long drive Daniel Bastian in div one and the invisible man in div two. Nearest the pin were Peter Arnold and Nigel Fitzgerald.
Birdie hole has not been won since last season so Paul Cox cleaned up last week and is now contemplating early retirement.
Next week is the Fred Ramsey foursomes.
Ramsey was a foundation partner of valued sponsors Ramsey Bros machinery group (with his brother Lloyd) and a great man of our district and member of our club.
Div one scores: T. Rodda 79/67, S. Elleway 86/72, G. Cook 82/74, A. Clements 82/74, P. Cox 83/76, D. Bastian 84/77, G. Merrett 98/86, A. Lee 90/78, P. Arnold 94/83, M. Ward 95/86.
