Cigarette butt lights fire near Arno Bay

Eastern Eyre CFS Group Officer Bryan Trigg is reminding the community to never throw cigarette butts out of car windows after an incident last week he said could have proved costly.

Arno Bay and Cleve CFS brigades responded to a roadside fire last Wednesday that was started by a cigarette thrown from the Lincoln Highway a few kilometres south of Arno Bay.

Local policeman Brevet Sergeant Sean Patton discovered the butt at the scene.

The fire was completely extinguished within around 10 minutes of CFS volunteers arriving on the scene, but Mr Trigg said the incident could have been far more serious in different weather conditions.

“If the wind had been going the other way, we would have had a fire through the paddock,” he said.

Brevet Sergeant Patton said anyone caught dropping a cigarette butt from a vehicle would be fined $560 all year round.

Mr Trigg reminded the community to “be careful,”
