Flashback Friday | 1963

Just like today, the beaches of Arno Bay in the January of 1963 played host to groups learning to swim.

The Learn-to-Swim campaign over 50 years ago saw 200 take the classes, which included live-saving training.

Despite classes taking place in the middle of summer, cold weather caused difficulties with the beach activities.

The Driver River Methodist Church, now home to the Uniting Church, hosted its very first wedding on January 19 with the marriage of Mary Ramsey and Eric Noble.

The first paper of the year looked back on the events of Christmas, with eight floats participating in the Cleve Christmas pageant.

An impressive Humpty Dumpty themed float made the front page.

High performing students from the 1962 school year were also recognised in the first edition.
