‘Shop local, support local’ is the overriding theme of this year’s Cleve Christmas Markets, according to the Cleve Districts Tourism & Development Group.
“It is an opportunity to do some last minute shopping, shop local and support small, at home businesses, as well as our local shops due to their late night trading on the same evening,” said tourism and community development officer, Bridget Johnstone.
Originally held as part of the pageant the Cleve Christmas Markets became an event in its own right last year, with more than 300 people coming through the Cleve District Hall to find some unique gifts from more than 25 stalls.
“It was recognised the markets component of the Christmas Pageant wasn’t that popular for stall holders due to the close proximity to Christmas Day, as the Cleve Christmas Pageant event is held the last Friday before Christmas,” said Bridget.
“It also wasn’t that popular for shoppers as the pageant is more about socialising with family and friends, catching up before the holiday season or catching up with those that are returning to the district for the holidays.”
“Separating the two events in 2017 worked really well and encouraged many more stall holders than previous years to come to Cleve.”
And it looks like the separation is going to be just as popular this year with a huge selection of stalls confirmed which will feature skincare, alcoholic drinks, cakes, cookbooks, clothing, jewellery, accessories, sweets, nuts, melts, toys, makeup, cards and much more.

Liberty Tuohy Music will be playing live at the event and there will be train rides around the streets of Cleve available for a gold coin donation which goes towards the costs associated with organising the Christmas Pageant.
“This train was the old Apex Train and the children in the community love it,” Bridget said.
“It only comes out twice a year – at the markets and at the Christmas pageant when Santa participates in the parade.
“The Cleve Christmas Markets help spread some Christmas cheer, the town Christmas tree is typically put up just beforehand too so it’s an opportunity for people to come and view this in the evening, as well as check out other Christmas lights around the town.
“We would like to thank the community for supporting the event either through their attendance as a stall holder or shopper, as well as the Cleve Districts Tourism & Development Group for ongoing ideas, feedback and support.”
If you were unable to secure a spot for the 2018 event, the 2019 event will be back next year on Friday, December 6, 2019.
Council welcomes any feedback regarding the event, it can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org
The Cleve Markets will take place this Friday, December 7 at the Cleve District Hall from 5-8pm.
