Rainbow of colour on Arno green

The Arno Bay Bowling green was a rainbow of colours on Saturday, July 14 for the club’s annual three bowl triples.

The green was full with 16 teams coming from Tumby Bay, Port Neill, Cowell, Cleve, Kimba, Whyalla town and local teams from Arno Bay.

The green bowled beautifully and everyone was most impressed with the improvements.

Teams played three games of 12 ends, starting off with very strong north-northeast winds, challenging even the most “professional” bowlers, but after a delicious lunch of soup, homemade pies and fruit salad, we ventured out onto the green to slightly calmer conditions.

I was able to bowl a beautiful bowl, ending up out of bounds, all on the correct bias, sorry Skip.

There were of course a few wrong biases during the day, even one bowled by the winning side, who is a former champion of champions, proving everyone can lose concentration occasionally.

There was an eight bowled by the shearers, with the ninth bowl on the bank.

A huge thank you to everyone who made the day successful

Great effort as two of that team had never played competition bowls before.

Louisa Green and Dillon Schamaal and their third player, Jude Siviour, are hoping to make a comeback this year after a few years away.

Overall winners for the day were Annette and Jacko O’Brien and Ally Baldock with three wins, scoring 145 points.

Second were Erin and Jeremy Calliss and Rose Jenkins with two wins and 104 points.

Third for the day were Sheryl Gale, Bev Southall and Laurie Vidler with two wins on 102 points.

There were seven teams with two wins for the day with only eight points separating the eighth and second teams.

The Whyalla side were awarded the NABA with their final score not showing their talent, well done as two of them had never played on a green before and one of them has only just started playing and she had never played in a tournament before.

Thank you to our generous sponsors, Telstra Whyalla, who were unfortunately unable to participate.

A huge thank you to everyone who made the day so successful, the green keepers, bar maids, kitchen workers, tournament director and all of those who did behind the scene tasks to make the day run so smoothly.

And of course, thank you to all the bowlers.

Hope to see you at our tournament in January.

Keep an eye out for the billboard at the front of the bowling green for Sunday Fundays.

If the green is prepared and the weather is pleasant, we are having a roll occasionally.

Check the Arno Bay buy, swap and sell Facebook page, and the billboard which goes out on Saturday afternoons.
