Info on ‘support’ won’t be sought

THE Kimba District Council has decided not to ask the Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Matt Canavan for clarity on how much weight the upcoming ballot will carry in defining ‘broad community support’ for the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility (NRWMF).

Councillor Brian Cant put forward the motion at last week’s meeting and said it would be good to have more details so the community could be aware of the outcome of their vote.

Mr Cant said he was worried a “simple majority is not enough” and it was important to get clarity.

He wanted the information to be in by July 23, in line with the council’s previous resolution, to give the community the information it needed – from the minister and the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science (DIIS) – to make a well-informed vote.

However, the motion was defeated four votes to two.

Councillor Peter Rayson said the motion had been left too late.
