Small field stakes qualifying claim for Kimba championships

The lure of a long weekend near the water, Mortlock Shield commitments and sending a contingent to represent Kimba at Pinnaroo Golf Club’s annual open meant only six golfers took to local fairways for the Elders Insurance stroke event on June 9.

With several Kimba Golf Club members eager to produce a solid fifth round qualifying card for the 2018 Club Championships, the small cohort set out in two groups in perfect conditions, with rain in the days leading up to the event ensuring an ever-thickening cover of green welcomed players.

The decision to make the first hole the setting for the CL and ME Milton Long Drive looked questionable 10 minutes into the round, with only Ron Havelberg keeping his tee shot on the fairway to claim the easiest prize of his golfing career.

Thankfully, players were able to dust off the cobwebs as play continued, with Lyndon Keane finding some rare consistency to return to the clubhouse with a 70 net to secure bragging rights.

Five-marker Shaun Hissey, looking resplendent in golfing attire only he could pull off, was the next best at the 19th hole, carding a 78 net and doing his 2018 Club Championships chances no harm.

Michael Inglis was the most impressive of the novelty prize winners, landing his hole five approach on the scrape to win the Kimba Motor Bodies Eagle Shot.

Keane showed a deft touch on the 10th hole to add the Murray Pest Control Pin Shot gong to his trophy cabinet for the day.

Players will go head-to-head in the WTC Rural Stableford on Saturday, June 16 as they contest the fourth round of qualifying for the Eatts Trophy at 11.30am.

Visiting golfers are always welcome to take part, and anyone intending to compete is asked to be at the clubhouse by 11.15am to register.
