Our Butcher @ Cowell’s Mexican Jalapeno Chicken sausages have been named as the Sausage King for poultry sausages at the West Coast, Mid North and Yorke Peninsula regional final last month.
The Cowell business was one of three Eyre Peninsula butcher shops to come first at the competition on April 20, which qualified it for the state grand final, which will be held at the Adelaide Central Markets on Friday, June 29.
Owner Joanne Klingberg said it was a big achievement for the shop, which she and her husband purchased in 2016.
“The region covers a lot of butcher shops so to win one of the categories is a big thing for us,” Mrs Klingberg said.
Mrs Klingberg said the Mexican jalapeno chicken sausage had started to gain popularity within the local community.
“The classic barbecue sausage will always be popular because they are plain and cheaper, so they’re a easier choice,” she said.
“But the gourmet sausages are still quite popular, all of the different varieties.
“We probably collectively sell as many gourmet sausages as we do barbecue sausages.”
The chicken sausage was not the only success the butcher had at the competition, coming away with two seconds for its Country Style and Pork Mustard sausages and a third for the Sundried Tomato and Basil sausage as well as a fourth in the best butchers gourmet burger category.
While this year was the first time Mrs Klingberg had entered the competition, the previous owners had entered, receiving a third in the 2015 regional final.
At last year’s regional final, Kimba’s Chestwood Meats came first in the best gourmet burger category.
Wudinna Meat Store had the most success at the final coming first in three categories, while Meat @ Tumby came first in the gourmet/open class sausage category, with both stores also winning gold in addition to silver and bronze, while Cummins Meat Store received a silver and bronze.
