A COWELL local made up one half of the winning team to take out the Cowell Bowling Club’s veteran mixed pairs event on Wednesday, April 4 – which was a follow-on event from the club’s Easter tournament.
The tournament manager, Robert Udy read out the conditions of play – which was four games of 12 ends playing three bowl pairs – to all competitors.
He also welcomed the 22 teams participating on the day with players coming from all over the Eyre Peninsula and the country.
Players came from interstate locations including Wonthaggi and Sunbury Victoria; Tathra, New South Wales; Woodgate, Queensland; and Geraldton, Western Australia as well as Hawker, Yorketown, Moonta, Whyalla Golf, Port Neill, Cowell, Cleve and Arno Bay.
The winners were Margaret Baker from Cowell and Brian Wright from Geraldton with two wins.
In second place were Joyce and Ian Kirby from Woodgate, Queensland with three wins and one draw for 101 points.
In third place was Maria Heywood and Wing Anesbury from Hawker with three wins one draw for 100 points.
Robert Udy called out all place getters and president Rodney Haywood presented all the winners with their prizes.
All place getters congratulated the club on a great tournament and thanked all the sponsors.
The players from interstate said they were enthralled with the friendships they made over the day and for the continuation on from the Easter tournament.
In closing the president thanked all members once again for a great effort.
Haywood said the work that went into preparing for the event had been a long-term commitment from the club.
He said while work was done over the four days of play, most of the work took place over the last four or more weeks leading up to the Eastern tournament and veteran’s mixed pairs event.
Haywood then presented a engraved club cup to all the players from interstate as a token to remember the Cowell Bowling Club by.
