The Probus Club District of Cleve held its March meeting on Tuesday, March 6 at the Arno Bay Hotel.
The meeting combined the club’s annual general meeting with the club’s 15th birthday celebrations.
The Cleve Probus Club was formed at a public meeting held at the Cleve Hotel on April 23, 2003 when five members of the Whyalla Rotary Club explained the objects of the club and benefits that are provided by a Probus Club.
Also present at that public meeting in 2003 were Probus members from Port Augusta, Kimba and Cowell as well as 24 people of the Cleve community and 14 apologies.
At that 2003 meeting, Don Smith was elected foundation president of the Cleve Probus Club.
The membership of the Cleve Probus Club now stands at 70.
Over the years, members of the Cleve Probus Club have enjoyed a variety of outings to very interesting places, a wide variety of guest speakers on a wide range of topics, new members joining, fun Christmas dinners with some great entertainment and a very successful 2017 Probus rally, which was held at the Cleve Institute.
To mark the club’s 15th birthday, president Shirley Dennis made a large cake decorated with the Probus emblem, which was cut by the first president Don Smith and served with morning tea.
Cleve Probus Club members received a packet of tic-tacs if their lucky number was drawn out.
As part of the annual general meeting, a number of club members were elected into office for 2018-19.
Office bearers include Mary Edwards, Janys Asser, Elain Schumann, Shirley Dennis, Kath Roberts and Bevan Millard, with David Reed elected as the Cleve Probus Club’s new president for 2018-19.
