Many plans in progress for 2018

The District Council of Kimba is excited about the upcoming New Year and has many projects in progress over the next twelve months.

We have been busy planning and actioning ideas for application to the $2M Community Benefits Program.

These include a plan we are currently developing on establishing solar and battery energy options across our entire council district. Importantly the plan will deliver value and affordability, whilst offering resilience with long term benefits in an environmentally responsible project.

Again in the early stages of planning, we will be also applying for funds to upgrade and revitalise our Institute.

The plan will include new cooling/heating systems for the main hall, new acoustic ceiling with modern and efficient lighting, new windows and repairs and painting inside and out.

We are investigating options to provide a free WiFi service for the town centre precinct.

This is just the beginning of a long term strategy to provide reliable and effective communication over the whole district.

We are also partnering other groups for an all abilities playground and also the possibility of a Skate Park.

A new toilet/shower block at the recreation reserve will also be investigated in line with Councils commitment to our tourism strategy which has already shown amazing results to this point.

We will also submit our plan to use Peter Kenyon and his team to develop a community and economic development strategy through a series of community workshops and information sessions.

Our works team will be re-sheeting 15kms of roads, with 6km’s already completed.

Already over 2000km’s of roads have been graded in this financial year, including our complete road network as part of our pre-harvest program, this will of course continue in the new year.

Also included in this year’s budget are plans to seal the road at the recreation reserve that leads to the Kimba District Football and Netball Clubrooms.

155 metres of footway has been laid between Caldwell Drive and North Terrace on High Street as part of Council’s ongoing commitment to construct one new footpath per year within our township.

We will complete a further 220 metre’s of new footway and kerbing in High Street from South Terrace to Martin Terrace in the new calendar year.

We have $100,000 budgeted for town street resealing and $150,000 allocated for sealed road maintenance including rural sealed roads.

Council is also actively championing a stronger and more effective community engagement and communication strategy.

You will see this in many forms, including ‘Our Say” via social media and council’s website as well as more mail outs and questionnaires.

With Local Government Elections due in November 2018 we will be active in encouraging nominations and providing opportunities and information for anyone considering taking on this role.

We are encouraging people to make themselves known to our CEO as early as possible to gain knowledge on exactly what is involved and how best to proceed.

Don’t hesitate to talk to a sitting elected member for feedback at anytime also.

Dean Johnson,

Kimba District Council mayor
