The inaugural Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy country under 12 championships were held in Adelaide beginning on Wednesday, October 4.
Eight teams from around country SA participated including one from Eyre Peninsula, called the North West Wizards.
Boys had to be 12 and under as of December 31 to participate.
Five games were played over the three days in the twenty/20 format with a game in the morning and the afternoon.
The first morning was spent getting to know the coaches and their team-mates.
This was followed by a training session taken by the eight academy coaches.
The North West Wizards were coached by head coach Shaun Seigert who has a wealth of cricketing experience and the boys really enjoyed his expertise and guidance.
The Wizards won their first two games but lost their next three games, all by close margins.
They were always a chance to win but could not quite get over the line.
The twenty/20 format made for an exciting game.
All the boys except the wicket keeper had to bowl and no batter was to face more than 30 deliveries.
The boys all got chance to bat in a different position every game.
This was well managed by the coach and meant all of the boys got good experience at the top of the innings and lower down the order.
All the games were played on turf at the University of Adelaide grounds near the Adelaide airport.
The turf pitches were a great experience for the boys and they relished the opportunity.
The games were umpired by South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) accredited umpires who were great for the boys.
From the sidelines the parents would often see the umpires helping the boys out with their play on the field.
Wizards Bodhi Fauser from Port Lincoln and Jak Lienert from Kimba were named in the team of the carnival after playing well in all five games.
The feedback from the boys and the parents was great and the concept looks like it will continue in years to come.
Thanks must go to the academy for facilitating the carnival and the parents for taking the boys and helping out with the scoring.
