Mayo, Australia vote yes to same-sex marriage

The results are in and the majority of residents in Mayo have voted in favour of marriage equality, in line with the national vote.

Of the 88,608 people who voted from within the Mayo district, which encompasses the Fleurieu Peninsula, 57,361 people at 64.7 per cent voted yes to same-sex couples having the right to marry in Australia.

The remaining 35.3pc, which accounts for 31,247 people, voted against.

Nationally, 61.6pc of Australians answered in the affirmative, while 38.4pc were against.

Legislation is expected to be introduced into Parliament today and debated in the coming weeks.
