Cowell Area School year 12 graduate Laura Walker has been awarded for outstanding achievement by Minister for Education and Child Development Susan Close.

The Minister for Education and Child Development Award rewards students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in any endeavour including academic, community service, sport, arts and personal challenge.

Laura, who has just finished year 12, attended the awarded ceremony at Parkside Primary School in late October, after being nominated by teacher Malcolm Rogers.

She was awarded for her good grades at school as well as her contribution to the Cowell Netball Club, where she coached the E2 team to a premiership while also playing.

She has also been helping out at the Cowell Swimming Club with coaching, in addition to being a volunteer at the Cowell Kindergarten.

Earlier in the year, Laura traveled to Nepal for a Medical High School Project for a fortnight, where she volunteered in a Nepalese Hospital.

Laura, who is now awaiting her final South Australian Certificate of Education results, is hoping to pursue a career in medicine but is not sure exactly what she is going to study.

The Minister for Education and Child Development Awards are given as part of Children’s Week, which this year ran from October 20 to 29.
