Cowell graduate is apprentice of year

Cowell Area School graduate Benn Posthumus has been named the state’s School Based Apprentice of the Year at the Adelaide Training and Employment Centre awards ceremony in Adelaide last month.

Benn, who has just finished Year 12 at Cowell Area School, has been completing his school-based apprenticeship in engineering fabrication at Cowell Engineering and Fabrication with Corey Gale.

He was offered the apprenticeship after completing work experience at the business.

Benn is hoping to get a career in underwater metal engineering and get into the Australian Navy.

He felt this apprenticeship would be great start for his career.

Throughout his year 12 studies, he has been working one day a week, which he then increased to two days a week in the last few months.

However, his work throughout the year will only account for three months out of his four-year apprenticeship.

Benn was nominated by his trainer from the Adelaide Training and Employment Centre (ATEC) in Lonsdale and then traveled to Adelaide for the award ceremony as a finalist.

Benn will continue working part-time at Cowell Engineering and Fabrication for the rest of the year before taking on his apprenticeship full-time at the start of next year.
