Cleve celebrates new lawn greens

The Cleve Bowling Club held the opening of the new green and surrounds on Saturday.

All Eastern Eyre Peninsula bowling clubs, Kimba, Lock, Cleve, Cowell, Arno Bay, Wudinna and Port Neill were represented by members from their clubs, while region five councillors Di Eatts and Daryl Hage were also in attendance.

Cleve club life members George and Audrey Schumann, Dorothea Kobelt, Bill and Joy Swaffer, John Schumann and Joan Post were also at the event and there was an apology received from Don Gale.

President Noel Millard welcomed everyone and mentioned the improvements made to the club including earlier renovations and the recent artificial green and surrounds upgrade.

Dorothea Kobelt and George Schumann spoke about the early days of the club with Mrs Kobelt mentioning how the ladies used to have their dress length measured on a regular basis to make sure it was 14 inches, no more or less, from the ground and stockings had to all be the same colour.

She also said getting morning tea was difficult at times with a wood stove.

She said she liked the style of today’s uniforms and the colours.

Mr Schumann said he joined in 1971 and really enjoyed his bowls and was disappointed he had to give the sport up three years ago.

On display were George Dolling, Gordon Burton and Clarrie Schumann’s uniforms of coats and ties.

To officially open the new green, Mrs Kobelt and and Mr Dolling cut the two ribbons, John Schumann laid the mat, Mrs Post rolled the jack and George Schumann showed he could still roll the bowl.

Life member Joy Swaffer also had a go at rolling on the green.

Afterwards, about 60 people enjoyed a light lunch and then those who wished to, took part in two games of bowls.

A couple of teams had fun with their skippers by changing the order of play at each end and on the last end ‘borrowing’ their opponents’ bowls.

Brian Dolling and his team of Ruth Spriggs, David ‘Bird’ Gray and James Searle won the day with 11 up, with Kym Wakefield, Mark Kobelt, Rina Noble and Bev Stocker one up.
