Lock Area School student Fletcher Kammermann is preparing to say goodbye to his curly locks at the hands of his classmates all in the name of raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Like most school students, Fletcher got his hair cut at the start of the school year, which was when he decided to see how long he could grow his hair, and he felt a year would be long enough.

However, his parents persuaded him to just grow it for the school year.

Originally, Fletcher did not have any special plans for his hair but that changed recently.

“About a month ago, my mum started looking at what could we do with my hair,” Fletcher said.

“We found out that to donate my hair for a wig for a cancer patient it had to be 35 centimetres long, not 14cm like we had originally thought.

“Even though I couldn’t do the wigs, we still wanted to cut my hair off for a worthy cause.”

Fletcher decided to use his hair to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, as a family in the Lock community had had to use the service for a few emergency flights over the past 18 months.

“We set up a RFDS fundraising page with the hope of raising about $300,” Fletcher said.

Fletcher will have his hair cut off by his fellow students in the student leadership group at Lock Area School’s end of year presentation assembly on Wednesday, December 13, much to the delight of his brothers and sisters.

After the students cut off his hair, a local hairdresser will be on hand to give him a tidy haircut.

So far, Fletcher has raised $1074.03 on his everyday hero account but is still looking to raise more.
