Foodland development to create up to 25 ongoing jobs

A rumoured Williamstown supermarket is a step closer to reality.

Barossa Herald has confirmed Saltyjams Pty Ltd, based in Norwood, lodged an application with The Barossa Council on August 18.

The Herald understands the development will be a Foodland supermarket.

The total cost of the project, including all fitout works by the lessor and lessee, will amount to some $3.5 million.

The application relates to three adjoining properties on Queen Street – numbers 17, 19 and 21-23, all currently under contract – and includes the old fish and chip shop which was at the centre of community speculation earlier this year.

The Herald understands the supermarket will span 1100 square metres and include 50 on-site car parks.

The total jobs during construction was estimated at about 50 people and, once trading, the supermarket business would employ between 20 to 25 full-time staff.

“The building has been designed to fit with the heritage (requirements) of Williamstown,” a source said.

Once the application satisfied council and DAP requirements, construction was anticipated to begin with six months of approval.

The Barossa Council was approached for comment and responded with a screenshot of the application, which is publicly available on council’s website.

A spokesperson said this was the only information council was publicly allowed to release at this time.
