Pharmacist Renae Dearman with Cowell Probus president Mike Talbot after her talk on Diabetes.

Cowell Probus Club’s guest speaker for their August meeting was local pharmacist Renae Dearman.

She gave a very intensive, informative talk on type two diabetes, which can be prevented and controlled.

Risk assessment sheets were handed out to all members to find out if they should improve their lifestyle and diet to help reduce the risk of developing type two diabetes.

Age, gender, country of birth, family history, high blood glucose (sugar) found in health examination or during pregnancy and smoking cigarettes all have an effect on people’s risk, along with diet, physical activity, waist measurement.

Ms Dearman answered many questions.

She is doing a university course on diabetes control and is a very experienced public speaker.

The club’s previous meeting where Ms Dearman spoke on mental health shows her knowledge and attributes in many areas.

President Mike Talbot offered a sincere vote of thanks.
