Cowell local Jade Kuhn has been nominated for the AusMumpreneur Award in the product innovation category.
Mrs Kuhn invented the ThermoBrush, which cleans the gaps in the blade system of the ‘all in one’ Thermomix, launched in December 2016.
She came up with the idea after her husband got annoyed when cleaning the thermomix, and asked her to “invent something” to make it easier.
“I got out the kids’ craft box and starting making prototypes,” Mrs Kuhn said.
“I didn’t know if it was going to work, the manufacturer was almost trying to stop me because he didn’t want me to waste my money if it didn’t work.”
However, within weeks of launching the product, they had sold to three continents.
“I decided to do a pre-launch to see what sales would be like, and I was selling one very 10 minutes,” Mrs Kuhn.
“Within a few days, I had people calling for wholesale orders, and AusMumpreneur calling to nominate me for the award.”
The South Australian made product is now being exported to Europe and the United Kingdom and has been sold to five continents.
“We love Australian made products and believe we have so much to offer in Australia, so it was an easy choice for me to have all tooling and manufacturing done right here in South Australia,” Mrs Kuhn said.
“We have three young children and when they grow up I want them to be able to get a job in any industry they choose and to be able to do that in Australia.”
Mrs Kuhn said balancing her business and motherhood had given her a number of benefits.
“Working for myself has given me the freedom to spend more time with my family and friends and be involved with my children’s education more,” Mrs Kuhn said.
However, Mrs Kuhn said she had faced challenges.
“Hubby and I have worked so hard to get this business up and running,” Mrs Kuhn said.
After being nominated for the award, Mrs Kuhn is now part of the AusMum network.
“I am so honored to be a finalist and stand alongside these other amazing women,” Mrs Kuhn said.
“I was lucky enough to receive a full scholarship to their Woman’s Business School and I have learnt so much.”
The winners of the AusMumpreneur Awards will be announced on August 25.
