The oldest rural women’s organisation in Australia, Women in Agriculture and Business South Australia (WAB), is celebrating its 100th birthday at Riverton this year where the first branch was formed.

These energetic, far sighted pioneering women are being well remembered and commemorated by present day members, young and old as part of this year’s centenary celebrations.

In the days of horse and buggy, these women were so determined to improve their education to become innovative and progressive that they travelled by horse to their meetings at night when the moon was full so they could see their way.

Today, Women in Agriculture and Business South Australia reflects with pride on its service record of helping rural women develop skills to become better farmers and business partners keeping abreast of modern practices.

The garden guru Kym Cyrus has bred a beautiful white hybrid tea rose named Spirit of Rural Women especially for this celebration.

The Adelaide City Council has created a special garden in Brougham Place, North Adelaide where 26 of those roses have been planted.

The Spirit of Rural Women rose was officially launched on April 21 and long time member and past state president Barbara Schaefer AO, who is from Kimba, unveiled a plaque at the garden.

At Riverton these pioneering women and all who followed are being remembered by a special planting in the Pioneer Gardens along with a seat for visitors to stay and reflect.

On October 28 and 29 celebrations will include a conference, dinner, and service of reflection as well as the annual meeting.

Former members or families of deceased members who are interested in being included in the celebration of th centenary at Riverton should contact Lynette Staude by calling on 0427 970 396 or emailing her at linfern1@bigpond.com.
