Zerna new Cowell Lions president

Visitors from the Cleve Lions Club were among 30 members and guests at the Cowell Lions Club’s Handover Dinner held on Tuesday, July 4.

The event was held at the Franklin Harbour Hotel with Bruce Francis as MC.

Christine Franklin proposed a toast to Lions International.

Brian Marshall from Whyalla Mount Laura Lions Club presided at the handover from past president Wendy Mellow to new president Allan Zerna, who then introduced the new board members for the forthcoming year.

The new members were Mick Williams (vice-president), Jack Kaden (secretary and catering), Daven Wagner (treasurer, pageant, market and bingo), Phil Wake (service and lion tamer), Bruce Francis (barbecue, Lions Mints, christmas cakes), Dennis Hannemann (raffle and cemetery), Geoff Turner (catering) and Rod Bevan (tail twister).

President Allan Zerna’s first task was to formally induct new member Peter ‘Stacks’ Story into the club, who was sponsored by Jack Kaden.

The Cowell Lions Club’s current projects include looking after the Cowell Cemetery, the Pet Cemetery and the May Gibbs wayside stop, as well as beautifying the original cemetery on Beach Road.

The club is currently in the midst of planning the Summer Street Markets and Christmas Pageant and running a weekly raffle and bingo, with tickets available for purchase at the Franklin Harbour Hotel.

The next meeting is combined with the Cleve Lions Club, where the clubs will meet with the vice district governor Phil Bowman on August 15.

The club will also host Tail End Charlie, a 9G Chamberlain tractor, made famous by the around Australia car rally in 1957, in conjunction with the Ag Museum on Lincoln Highway on Monday, August 21 starting from 4pm.

The organisers of the Tail End Charlie event, which is to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Tail End Charlie, are raising money for breast cancer and prostate cancer research.

Everyone is welcome to go and talk to the Tail End Charlie support crew and stay for a meal which will be served from 6pm.
