Great Flinders overtook Eastern Eyre in Sunday’s U15 Port Adelaide Magpies Cup on Sunday, at Port Lincoln.
The maroon and whites took the tournament win ahead of Lincoln Districts, East Whyall and, in fourth place, Eastern Eyre, taking home the cup for the ninth time in the carnival’s entire 50 year history.
Great Flinders was the team to watch all day, from the moment they faced Eastern Eyre in Game 1.
EASTERN EYRE v GREAT FLINDERS… The first half was a fierce and tight contest with no easy kicks. Both teams struggled to break forward in slippery conditions.
The Eastern Eyre backline gave strong team support, Brent Gray and Klay Harris battled hard in ruck.
It was not until late in the first half that Shannon Jenner speared an accurate kick to Jay Sheller to give Eastern Eyre their first major.
Half time score: Eastern Eyre 1-1 to Great Flinders 0-3.
Second half started with an unchanged Eastern Eyre line up with the rucks, followers and backline battling hard to push forward again.
A good strong contest came from Brent Gray, who again marked whilst still recovering from a previous marking dual, kicking a long goal to settle the side.
From then on Great Flinders had several shots at goal under good pressure from Eastern Eyre.
Great Flinders then kicked their first goal at the 8 minute mark, skill errors were made by both sides, however Eastern Eyre could not score another major.
