Dirt circuit back on track at Arno BAy

18 Feb, 2010 09:08 AM
Arno Bay Dirt Circuit held its first race meeting for 2010 under lights on Saturday night.

The first round started in day light due to daylight saving and even with offers from patrons to jump on the sun it was 8pm before the generators were started.

However, the night was an overwhelming success with competitors travelling from Fowlers Bay, Whyalla, Wudinna and Pt Lincoln to battle it out with our local drivers.

Anthony Darling and Peter Darling won the first street stock races for the night from Brenton Heath and Darren Carmody respectively.

Brad Stringer who sold his open wheeler at the end of last season is racing modifieds this year and won from Vel Satalic Pt Lincoln.

Reg Davis from Fowlers Bay showed us some superb driving and won from Peter Wake in the next modified race.

There was only four open wheelers competing and Bill Herde took the honors from Glen Wedding in the first race.

Round two, and Amy Chenoweth got off to a great start and lead for five laps, but she made one small mistake on the last lap, and went from first to third. Harley Pahl went on to win the race.

Kym Pahl won the next street stock race after starting from behind - Degan Smith managed a good second.

Reg Davis won his next modified race and Tom Harris who has the old ‘Seagull’ car absolutely flying won his modified race.

The open wheeler drivers were taking it in turn and this time it was Kalvy Hartwig who took the money.

Round 3 and the track was starting to blacken up, no dust and the competition was furious. Brenton Heath won the first street stock race of the round, and Anthony Darling the second.

Ian Ellis gave Reg Davis a run for his money this time in the modified race, but Reg was too good and made a brilliant pass on lap five to take the win. Vel Satalic won the next modified race from Rob Harradine who has missed a season, but has now got his Hemi-Commodore really going well.

This time Glen Wedding won the open wheeler race from Bill Herde.

Round four and the cars were getting unbelievable traction. Darren Carmody who was really enjoying his night won the first street stock race from Simon Veitch who is just a pleasure to watch.

Chris Boothby is one of our newer drivers and did well to get a first from Degan Smith in the next race.

Tom Harris drove the race of his life and lead from start to finish while Brad Stringer and Brenton Harris battled it out behind for second in the modifieds.

Reg Davis made it four wins from four starts in the next modified race winning fro Ian Ellis.

Simon Woolford won the open wheeler race and also got the fastest time of the night.

Simon is just starting to get used to this more powerful car and it was the best I have seen him drive since he pensioned of f the little white turbo.

Seven street stock cars nominated for the All comer ten lap feature race, and it was always going to be a beauty, however two laps into the race Chris Boothby lost control at the top of the straight and Kym Pahl had no where to go. It took half a n hour to remove the carnage and Simon Veitch went on to win the restart.

It was decided to run the open wheelers and the modifieds together in their feature race, and what a race it was Glen Wedding got a good lead while Kalvy Hartwig fought for second spot, Kalvy did an extremely good job to hold second.

Overall we were down on numbers but it was a great nights racing.

The next race meeting is another night meeting on March 20. Mark it on your calendar now.
