KIMBA DISTRICTS v COWELL… In breezy conditions the game between Kimba Districts and Cowell started off at its quick pace with both teams finding it hard to settle. Cowell scored first through Nathan Johnson after good work from the Cowell defence. Kimba got their first goal from Nathan Hornhardt after a gutsy effort from Hayden Whitwell, then replied again with a goal to Jordan Clements.
Both backlines were holding up strong, Cowell being led well by Wayne Piggott and Kimba by Leigh Fitzgerald and Shane Jericho.
Cowell started the second quarter quickly with a push forward from the centre and good forward pressure resulted in a goal to Nick Franklin.
Kimbas defence were suddenly being peppered by Cowell’s midfielders, however two 50m penalities to Jericho resulted in a goal to Kimba against the tide. Cowell’s Steve Wildman then stepped up with two good snap goals to put them back in front.
The see-sawing continued with late goals to Beinke and Congdon putting the Tigers into the lead by one point going into the main break.
Kimba started the second half with a good goal from the boundary to Hornhardt and another to Congdon, who celebrated with the aeroplane to put the Tigers back to a two goal lead.
Cowell’s Matg Franklin and Jack Burton were working hard in the packs and this pressure resulted ina goal to Johnson.
Cowell was locking it in their forward line, however poor goalkicking wasn’t putting pressure on the scoreboard. The last quarter promised to be and enthralling effort with a couple of kicks the difference.
Cowell came out firing in the early minutes with two quick goals to put the Cats in the lead. The momentum had swung and Cowell were putting the foot down.
A goal to Josh Siviour and the Tigers were well and truly under the pump. A late goal to Nick Franklin, who was outstanding in the second half, sealed Kimba’s fate - the Cats were victorious by 31 points.
Better players for the Tigers were Shane Jericho who was solid in defence all day while Matt Lienert and Hayden Whitwell worked hard. Cowell were excellent in the second half with Buzz Fiegert, Matt Franklin and Jack Burton leading the way while Nathan Johnson was good all day booting five goals.
