LOCK v EYRE UNITED…In a rather one-sided match the Lock Roos ran out easy winners over the seriously depleted Eyre United Saints. Good conditions and the big Lock oval gave both sides plenty of room to run and showcase their talents. The Roos took advantage of the undermanned Saints with a seven straight goal blitz in the first quarter. Lacking midfield pressure deliveries to Glover at full forward gave him the opportunity to kick two of his bag for the day and Northcott coming back from injury sat in the pocket all day, scoring three of his seven during this quarter. Alistair Pearce again had a great day in the ruck, drifting through the halfback line and plucking marks at will. His stats in this quarter rivalled the whole game stats of some players. Cummins led the defence line in style with Mellor, Britza and the Hetzels providing full backup. J. Telfer was all over the ground for the Saints, he was in every passage of play attempting to motivate his team. Foster was leading by example and Carmody and Schramm were batting, but to little avail.
With scores at Lock Lock 7-0 Eyre United 0-1 it is needless to say coach Mitchell had plenty to say to his charges whilst coach Hetzel was happy with the work rate of his boys.
The Saints began the second quarter with a far more focussed approach with two inside fifties only earning points within the first few minutes. Conversely the Roos forward thrusts netted them three goals. Finally at the eleven minute mark Foster was able to initiate play from defence which found Bailie who was able to out mark two opponents and chalk up the Saints first major. There were plenty of work from the Saints midfield but the Roo defence held firm and their runners supported the possessions from these hard workers.
Another run of three goals for Lock were added before the Saints could notch up their second from an uncertain kick from Telfer on the run. Another two majors before halftime gave the Roos an unassailable lead at the long break 15-3 to Saints 2-5.
Saints coach obviously made a difference at halftime, as the Saints really worked hard during the third quarter with the scoreboard reflecting this. In a very even quarter the J. Telfer led attacks had support from M. Schramm, Modra, Charlton and Thorpe. This gave their forwards the opportunity to add four straight goals for the quarter. Foster and Carmody were leading by example and Drewer, Baldissera and Strattford made their presence felt. Kelly, Britza, Pearce and Wake were the workers for the Roos feeding Glover, Northcott and Halman. It had taken the Saints half a match to realize why they were there and they were making it first to the ball and supporting their team – hence the very even quarter. Lock 2-6 Eyre united 6-5.
With the last quarter a mere formality, both teams appeared to take the foot from the pedal. In addition someone had put blinkers on the Lock forwards as they kicked five consecutive points before Glover kicked their first of the two for the quarter. Then they went on to kick a total of ten points for the quarter, with Halman kicking their other major. The Saints Charlton kicked truly at the fifteen minute mark after a great mark in the pack and fittingly their Captain Foster kicked the last goal for the game after a great passage of play involving Charlton.
Final scores Lock Roos 22-16 Eyre United 8-6. Like good wine A Pearce improves with age and was once again best for the Roos. S. Britza and Kelly ran all day and set up great opportunity for their team. Mellor, Cummins and Kay controlled defence and Glover and Northcott’s goal kicking tally was fantastic. J. Telfer played an outstanding game for the Saints – he must be a coach’s dream. Foster played an exemplary captains game, Carmody and young M. Schramm worked tirelessly and Modra and Charlton were all valuable for the Saints.
