 Lock secures finals berth

Lock secures finals berth

19 Aug, 2009 03:56 PM
In the Great Flinders final minor game, Lock were convincing winners over Cougars by 99 points to cement fourth position on the ladder and book a berth in the finals. A northerly wind and warm conditions would sort out who had the legs for four quarters on the big Lock oval.

Winning the toss Cougars were quick off the mark through Barnes and Cunningham to Turnball who made no mistake. From the next centre clearance Z. Tiller cleared to Northcott who kicked truly against the wind for the first of his four for the day. Ridgeway ran the ball around the boundary to Siegert at the seven minute mark posting his first for the day. The tussle between Siegert and Zacher was great football as was the Green versus Glover at the other end. Both defences were able to hold their man to only three goals for the day. From here on, Lock took control of the quarter with eight unanswered goals through hard work from Wake, A and G Hetzel and A Pearce feeding their forward line. The few opportunities Cougars had were smartly cleared through Cummins, Kay and C. Pearce. Kenny, Trezise and C. Turnball worked hard for Cougars in this quarter but too many Lock players were able to run off their man with ease – as was pointed out by coach J. Doudle at the break.

The second quarter was a complete turnaround as Haselgrove kicked truly within the first minute with Siegert and Bache joining the list. The Cougars team had picked up their pace with Myers, Moroney, Ridgway, Barnes and Wedd moving well. Pearce was still winning the knocks, so Cougars runners were roving to him and creating the centre clearances. They began combining as a team and talking – something that was sadly missing in the first quarter. Their backline had tightened up with Green and Wedd having a great quarter and their midfield putting pressure on to stop the easy flow to Lock’s forward line. C. Turnball was in everything and getting to the ball first was paying off. A. Hetzel was able to register Lock’s solitary goal at the twenty five minute mark after lack of discipline put him 20m in front of the goal. Lock’s seven goal lead had shrunk to a four goal lead at the long break. Lock 10-4 Cougars 6-4.

With the finals berth on the line it was Lock who grabbed the game with two hands and owned it for the next thirty minutes. L. Turnball initiated play to Meaney in the first minute to bring the margin to only three goals. Lock’s reply came through Glover as he was able to outrun his opposition and mark on the clubroom side. Eight unanswered goals to Lock ensured the game was theirs. Northcott and Z. Tiller were running freely backed by G and A Hetzel and Britza; A. Pearce drifted into holes all over the ground and Wake was back to his brilliant best. Cougars were unable to match their running and tackling counterparts.

Coach Hetzel instructed his midfield to continue the hard work and keep the game open for the flankers. A controlled Doudle exhorted his boys to play the game and keep their heads up which they did. Not throwing the towel in, the Cougars boys continued to nip at the heels of the Lock team who needed to put a solid quarter after their second quarter lapse. Moroney, Myers, tresize and C. Turnball kept sending the ball their way to eventually be rewarded with majors from Siegert and L. Turnball. Wake, Z. Tiller,A. Hetzel and Mellor all ran well during this quarter. A mark on the siren saw Northcott kick truly to finalize the scores at Lock 24-19 Cougars 9-10.

Wake and A. Pearce were untouchable for Lock, with A and G Hetzel. Z. Tiller and S. Britza among their best. Siegert and Kenny gave everything for Cougars, with Green and Wedd in the backlines battling valiantly and Tresize, Moroney and Turnball putting in a valuable game. Whilst a convincing win, Lock will need to play four quarters (as they did last week) otherwise a one quarter lapse will see them at the end of the road for this season.
