Wild weather at Mangalo

18 Feb, 2010 09:54 AM
Isolated storms hit Mangalo on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, leaving fires, floods and damaged buildings in their wake.

Local CFS units attended three different fires on Wednesday afternoon, started by lightning.

At the same time, the Mangalo property of Nigel and Jenny Petersen was hit by thunderstorms, rain and wind that took the roof off a shed and damaged trees.

The owners expect the damaged shed will be written off.

“We received 30mm of rain in about 10 minutes - meanwhile three different fires were burning within 10km of our property,” CFS volunteer Nigel Petersen.

“Here we were, watching for fires, while the rain was pouring down on us.”

The Heggarton-Haywood Road burnt 11ha of stubble and scrub. Mangalo CFS attended but rain helped put the fire out before other units attended.

On the Kimba- Kielpa road 55ha of pasture and crop. Cleve, Kimba and Darke Peak units attended along with the Eastern Eyre bulk water tanker attended

Gum Flat and Cleve units attended a third fire at Campoona Road which burnt two hectares of grass and scrub.
