The Liberal Party will stand behind Flinders candidate Peter Treloar who was caught driving at 164km per hour near Streaky Bay last month.
Streaky Bay Police issued the Edillilie farmer and grain industry lobbyist with a six-month instant loss of licence notice and a traffic infringement notice when he was detected by mobile radar travelling at 54km per hour over the speed limit on the Flinders Highway 10km south of Streaky Bay in his Holden Commodore sedan.
He was fined $594 and allowed 24 hours before the ban was enforced.
Treloar told the West Coast Sentinel last week that “the party accepts that I have made a bad error of judgment and have been penalised by the authorities accordingly”.
“To begin with I’d like to say there’s no excuse for driving over the speed limit,” he said. “I apologise to the community and accept my punishment completely. I’m a hard working candidate who’s completely committed to the electorate and the party remains committed to my work and candidacy in Flinders.”
Not being able to drive will make it difficult for Treloar to campaign in the vast Flinders electorate, which stretches from the WA border to Kimba and Port Lincoln, including the whole West Coast.
