Kimba 'girls' paint the town pink

22 Oct, 2009 09:58 AM
More than $5000 was raised at the ‘Girls in Pink’ breast cancer fundraiser held in Kimba last Friday night. The event saw the Kimba Community Hotel dining room transformed to a sea of pink with the 170 guests donning all manner of pink outfits and accessories, many handmade.

The ‘best dressed’ table was won by Helen Beinke, Sharon Rowe, Tania Woolford, Kath Zaleski, Tara Kenny, Sue Sully, Donna Johnson, Steph Woolford, Katrina King and Emma Bagshaw. Sue Woolford was named ‘best dressed’, while Jill Dart earned the title of ‘worst dressed’ with her Op Shop pj's and dressing gown. Annie Lynch drove 2.5 hours down from Moonaree Station where she was rousabouting to attend and was also given a prize for her outfit.

Breast cancer survivor Maxine Barker from Port Lincoln gave a short talk on the Look Good, Feel Better workshops which now occur in most major regional centres for women undergoing breast cancer treatment.

Generous sponsorship and profits was further boosted with a pink piggy bank on each table for extra donations, a raffle and a raucous auction.

Auctioneer Phil Arcus got right into the spirit of things, dressing as a pink fairy with his spotters ‘Harmony’ and ‘Rhapsody’ (aka Jill Arcus and Muffy Inglis). The auction of each table’s gifts was outstanding, raising more than $1800 in a very competitive, noisy atmosphere.

Entertaining MC Sue Goodman tried valiantly to keep the crowd under some control but the noise level peaked when six brave local lads dressed in women’s clothes as the ‘Boxhead Beauties’ and paraded with their heads covered for everyone to guess their true identity.

Each table also had to supply a decorated bra, which was hung for judging. Later in the night, a representative from each table had to model the bra and the winners were Kerri Cliff’s table with the bra decorated by Judy Pain. Meagan Lienert’s and Lisa Zibell’s entries also received a prize.

Deanne Gibbs, Pat Beinke, Michelle Rayner, Jenice Seal and Nina Andrew were the driving force behind the successful breast cancer fundraiser.
