Join the legends at Darke Peak

23 Sep, 2009 12:17 PM
Darke Peak will celebrate its inaugural Legends Festival on October 3 and 4.

Kick off the day with the Wudinna Team Yarders Competition at 9am on Saturday and follow the action for a two-day program as local yarders demonstrate their horsemanship.

Across the road will be the EP Car and Bike Show and Shine with a full line-up of old, feral and vintage vehicles.

And for those who really know their engines, there’s a competition to guess how long the motor car engine will run for without oil and water.

Feel the rush of a tandem skydive over Darke Peak landing in at the golf course.

Or for those who prefer to have their feet on the ground, a fun run will commence at 10.30am - meet at the Darke Peak Hotel to get a ride to Carappee and run, walk or ride the eight kilometers downhill to the main street finish line.

ABC Radio’s Peter Goers will be on hand for soapbox interviews with local and visiting legends.

The legendary ‘Hellbent’ Hotel will be reopened, bigger and better, with plenty of character and friendly service guaranteed.

Visit the ‘Hall of Fame’ at the Peak Stop and get a Legends t-shirt, and then call around to the hall to view ‘A Ladies Bush Telegraph’ exhibition and a comprehensive display from Minerals on Eyre.

Visit the old school building for photographs and nostalgia from Darke Peak’s earliest days. Check out the fleece of Darke Peak’s most decorated ram and get a closer look at the ‘Wake Rake’.

See EP horseman Shane Cooper showcase his horse and whipcracking skills or enjoy the range of family fun: Traditional games, face painting, a bouncy castle and a mechanical bull.

Dance the night away with EP bands ‘3 Piece Feed’ and ‘Just in Case’ – all out the front of the Peak Pub.

Sunday morning you can breakfast at the Golf Club and watch the skydiving before heading off to the netball and football Legends exhibition .

For one weekend, this remote township will swell like the bellies of the residents who recorded the highest SA beer consumption per population ratio at the Darke Peak Hotel during the 1990s.

But it’s not just beer drinkers who are born and bred at Darke Peak – there’s other achievers like three-time Olympic softball medallist Simmone Morrow, AFL champion Brett Chalmers, national croquet champion Mark Kobelt and Hawthorn’s current assistant coach Ricki Macgowan.

So come along and join the legends, this October long weekend, at Darke Peak.
